Together We Grow: The Power of Cooperatives!

What if the secret to a better world was simply working together?

What if the secret to a better world was simply working together?

Every year on the first Saturday of July, the world celebrates International Day of Cooperatives. In 2026, this special day falls on 4th July. A cooperative is a group of people who join together to help one another achieve common goals. Instead of one person or one company making all the decisions, everyone in a cooperative has a say. They share the work, share the profits, and look out for each other. Cooperatives can be found in farming, banking, housing, food, education, and community services all around the world.

Cooperatives are built on important values that children learn about every day in school and at home. These values include teamwork, fairness, honesty, responsibility, and caring for others. When farmers form a cooperative, they can buy seeds and tools together at a lower cost and sell their crops at a better price. When families join a housing cooperative, they help one another afford safe homes. In Singapore, you may have seen cooperatives at work through organisations like NTUC FairPrice, which began as a cooperative to provide affordable food for everyday families. NTUC FairPrice is one of Asia's largest cooperatives and continues to serve millions of Singaporeans today.

Cooperatives are especially important for communities that face challenges. They create jobs, support local businesses, and make sure that the benefits are shared fairly among all members. Around the world, there are more than three million cooperatives employing over 280 million people. That is about one in ten workers on the planet! Whether it is a small fishing village in Indonesia or a large credit union in Europe, cooperatives prove that when people cooperate, they can solve big problems together. No one has to face difficulties alone when a community stands united.

The learning message of International Day of Cooperatives is simple but powerful: Work together, share fairly, and grow stronger. As students, you already practise cooperation every day when you work in groups, help a classmate, or take turns sharing classroom materials. Think about one task at home or in school that becomes easier when everyone pitches in. Perhaps it is cleaning up after lunch, completing a group project, or organising a school event. These everyday acts of cooperation are the seeds of a fairer and kinder world. When you choose to cooperate, you are already making a difference!
