Tropical Wonders: Earth's Most Magical Regions Revealed!

From dazzling rainforests to sparkling coral reefs, the tropics are bursting with life — and our planet needs them more than ever!

From dazzling rainforests to sparkling coral reefs, the tropics are bursting with life — and our planet needs them more than ever!

Every year on 29 June, people around the world celebrate the International Day of the Tropics, a United Nations-recognised observance that shines a spotlight on the incredible regions that lie near the Equator. These tropical zones are some of the most colourful, diverse, and important places on Earth. They are filled with towering rainforests, winding rivers, vibrant coral reefs, and an astonishing variety of plants and animals. Singapore itself sits almost exactly on the Equator, making us a true tropical nation — and that is something to be very proud of!

The tropics are not just beautiful — they are essential to all life on Earth. Tropical rainforests, like those found in countries such as Brazil, Indonesia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, produce enormous amounts of oxygen and absorb huge quantities of carbon dioxide. This helps to slow down climate change. The Amazon Rainforest alone is sometimes called the 'lungs of the Earth' because of how much oxygen it produces. Closer to home, Southeast Asia's rainforests in Malaysia, Indonesia, and across the region are among the oldest and most biodiverse on the planet. Singapore's own Bukit Timah Nature Reserve is a precious patch of primary tropical rainforest right in the heart of our city.

Tropical regions also give us some of our favourite foods! Bananas, mangoes, pineapples, coconuts, durians, papayas, and cacao — the plant used to make chocolate — all grow in tropical climates. Beyond food, the tropics are home to extraordinary wildlife. Animals like orangutans, tigers, toucans, poison dart frogs, and thousands of species of butterflies and birds can only be found in these warm, lush environments. Coral reefs in tropical oceans, sometimes called the 'rainforests of the sea,' support about 25 percent of all marine life despite covering less than one percent of the ocean floor.

Sadly, tropical regions face serious challenges today. Deforestation — the clearing of forests for farming, logging, and building — destroys habitats and threatens wildlife. Climate change is warming oceans and bleaching coral reefs. Pollution is harming rivers and coastlines. The International Day of the Tropics reminds us that protecting these incredible environments is everyone's responsibility. As students living in a tropical country, we can play our part by learning about nature, reducing waste, supporting conservation efforts, and appreciating the green spaces around us. Every action, big or small, helps protect Earth's tropical treasures for future generations.
