Every year on 26th June, people all around the world observe the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. This special day was created by the United Nations to remind everyone — especially young people — about the dangers of drugs and the importance of making healthy, safe choices. In Singapore, organisations, schools, and families come together to spread this important message, because a safe and healthy community starts with informed and confident individuals.
Drugs are harmful substances that can damage the brain, body, and future of a person who uses them. Some drugs may look harmless or even come with promises of feeling good, but they are deeply dangerous. They can make people very sick, affect their ability to think clearly, damage relationships with family and friends, and even lead to serious legal trouble. In Singapore, drug offences are taken very seriously under the law, and the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) works hard to keep our streets safe. The best protection anyone has is knowledge and the courage to say no.
But this day is not just about saying no to drugs. It is really about saying YES — yes to healthy habits, yes to taking care of your mind and body, yes to talking to trusted adults when something feels wrong, and yes to a bright future full of possibilities. Simple daily choices like drinking enough water, eating nutritious food, getting good sleep, spending time outdoors, reading books, and sharing your feelings with family all add up to a strong and healthy life. These habits build resilience, which means the inner strength to handle challenges without turning to harmful things.
You are never too young to be a champion of healthy living. Talk to your parents, teachers, or school counsellors if you ever feel pressured or confused about anything. Real strength is not about going it alone — it is about knowing when to ask for help and choosing the right path even when it is difficult. This 26th June, challenge yourself: name three healthy choices you will make today, and encourage a friend to do the same. Together, we can build a generation that chooses health, chooses hope, and chooses a better future for Singapore and the world.
