Understanding Illness Makes Us Kinder Human Beings

What if learning about someone's health condition could turn you into a better friend?

What if learning about someone's health condition could turn you into a better friend?

Every year on 19th June, the world observes World Sickle Cell Awareness Day. This special day encourages people everywhere — including students right here in Singapore — to learn about sickle cell disease and to understand the real challenges faced by those who live with it every single day. Awareness is powerful, and it all starts with curiosity and kindness.

Sickle cell disease is a condition that affects the blood. Normally, red blood cells are round and flexible, moving easily through our blood vessels to carry oxygen around the body. In people with sickle cell disease, some red blood cells become stiff and shaped like a crescent or sickle, which can block blood flow and cause pain, tiredness, and weakness. It is not contagious — you cannot catch it from another person — but it is something a person is born with, inherited from their parents.

One of the most important lessons of this day is that not all health conditions are visible on the outside. A classmate or friend might look perfectly fine but could be managing pain or fatigue quietly. In Singapore, we celebrate diversity and take pride in our kampung spirit — looking out for one another. This awareness day reminds us to practise that same spirit by never judging someone based on how they look, and always choosing kindness and respect instead.

When we learn more about conditions like sickle cell disease, we grow in empathy and understanding. We become better friends, better classmates, and better members of our community. Awareness truly does bring care, and care brings hope. So today, take a moment to learn, to reflect, and to make a promise — to be a little kinder to everyone around you, because you may never know what someone else is quietly going through.
