Where Play Becomes Learning

What if the most important thing a child can do today is simply play?

What if the most important thing a child can do today is simply play?

Every year on 11 June, the world celebrates the International Day of Play — a special day created to remind us that play is not a waste of time, but one of the most powerful tools for learning and growing. UNICEF, the United Nations agency that protects children's rights, describes play as so important that every child in the world has the right to it. That means no matter where you live, whether in Singapore, Uganda, or Brazil, play belongs to you.

But what exactly does play do for you? The answer might surprise you. When you play a board game, you practise strategy and patience. When you act out a story with friends, you build language and empathy. When you kick a football around, you strengthen your body and learn teamwork. Even building with blocks trains your brain to think spatially and solve problems. Scientists and educators have found that children who play regularly develop stronger memories, better concentration, and greater creativity. In Singapore, schools and parents are increasingly recognising that a child who plays well also tends to learn well.

Play comes in many wonderful forms. There is free play, where you make up the rules yourself in the playground or at home. There is structured play, like sports, music, drama, or art classes. There is also digital play, such as educational games and creative coding activities, which are popular in Singapore's tech-savvy classrooms. Each type of play builds different skills, and mixing them all together gives children a rich foundation for life. Even pretending to run a hawker stall or organising a neighbourhood scavenger hunt counts as meaningful play.

Sadly, many children around the world — and even some right here in Singapore — do not get enough time to play. Heavy homework loads, long tuition schedules, and too much screen time without interaction can crowd out the free, joyful play that children truly need. On this International Day of Play, let us all make a promise: to protect and celebrate every child's right to play, laugh, imagine, and grow. Remember, today's playful child is tomorrow's creative thinker, compassionate leader, and confident problem-solver.
