Two wheels, one planet, and endless reasons to ride — cycling is one of the best things you can do for your body, your mind, and the Earth!

Every year on 3 June, the world celebrates World Bicycle Day. This special day was officially recognised by the United Nations in 2018 to remind everyone that the bicycle is a simple, affordable, and powerful tool for a better life. From busy cities to quiet neighbourhoods, billions of people around the world use bicycles every single day. Whether you ride to school, cycle in a park, or zoom around your void deck, cycling is one of the most joyful activities you can enjoy at any age.

Cycling is fantastic for your health. When you pedal, your heart beats faster, your lungs work harder, and your muscles grow stronger. It is a great form of exercise that helps children maintain a healthy weight, build strong bones, and improve coordination and balance. Cycling also boosts your mood because physical activity releases chemicals in the brain called endorphins, which make you feel happy and energised. Many doctors and health experts recommend that children get at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day, and cycling is a brilliant way to achieve that goal.

Beyond health, cycling is a wonderful choice for our planet. Cars and buses that burn petrol release harmful gases into the air, contributing to air pollution and climate change. Bicycles, on the other hand, produce zero emissions. In Singapore, initiatives like the Park Connector Network and dedicated cycling paths in towns such as Punggol, Tengah, and Jurong Lake District make it easier and safer for residents to cycle as part of daily life. The Land Transport Authority has been expanding cycling infrastructure so that more Singaporeans can choose the bicycle as a clean and green transport option.

Cycling also teaches important life skills. Learning to ride a bicycle requires patience, persistence, and courage, especially when you fall and get back up again. Riding safely on roads and paths teaches responsibility and awareness of others around you. You learn to follow traffic rules, signal your turns, and look out for pedestrians. These habits of discipline, focus, and care are skills that help you in school and throughout life. So this World Bicycle Day, whether you are six or sixteen, dust off your bicycle, strap on your helmet, and celebrate the joy of riding. Every pedal stroke is a step towards a healthier you and a greener world!
