Kick It! Why Football Unites the Whole World

From the dusty fields of Kallang to the roaring stadiums of Europe, football is the one game that makes the entire planet hold its breath.

From the dusty fields of Kallang to the roaring stadiums of Europe, football is the one game that makes the entire planet hold its breath.

Football, also called soccer in some countries, is the most popular sport on Earth. Over four billion people โ€” more than half the world's population โ€” consider themselves football fans. The game is simple at its heart: two teams of eleven players try to score by kicking a ball into the opposing team's goal. Yet within that simplicity lies endless strategy, skill, teamwork, and drama that keeps fans on the edge of their seats.

Singapore has its own proud football history. The Singapore Lions, our national team, have won the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Championship, also known as the Suzuki Cup, multiple times, bringing joy to fans across the nation. The Singapore Premier League (SPL) is our top professional league, featuring local clubs like Lion City Sailors, Tampines Rovers, and Albirex Niigata. Kallang's Singapore Sports Hub, which opened in 2014, holds the iconic National Stadium with a capacity of about 55,000 spectators โ€” one of the largest domed stadiums in the world. Young Singaporeans can join football academies and school teams to develop their skills from an early age.

Football was first standardised in England in 1863 when the Football Association wrote the official rules of the game. The FIFA World Cup, first held in 1930 in Uruguay, is today the most-watched sporting event on the planet, drawing over three billion viewers every four years. Nations like Brazil, Germany, Italy, and France have lifted the famous golden trophy multiple times. Legendary players such as Pelรฉ, Diego Maradona, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Lionel Messi have inspired generations of young footballers worldwide.

Beyond entertainment, football teaches important life skills. Working as a team, communicating on the pitch, showing resilience after losing a goal, and celebrating wins with grace are all lessons that carry into everyday life. Football also promotes physical health โ€” a match involves about 10 kilometres of running for each player! On Football Day, whether you kick a ball in your school field, watch a match with your family, or simply learn more about the game, remember that football is far more than a sport โ€” it is a universal language that brings people together.
